Peter Doig is regarded as one of the world's most influential painters of the present. Doig paintings refer on one hand on the history of painting and on the other hand they are firmly anchored in contemporary life.
The starting point for his paintings are often travel brochures, newspaper photographs, film stills, or private snapshots. They are the changing environments and societies in which the artist has lived: the frozen lakes of his childhood in Canada, the dazzling metropolis of London or the Caribbean as landscapes and urban scenes of Port of Spain on the island of Trinidad.
In 2008 the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt presented a big exhibition with paintings of the last 20 years.
