Timm Rautert (*1941 Tuchel, West Prussia) studied photography with Otto Steinert at the Folkwangschule and is considered one of the most important contemporary German photographers.

Over the decades, he has succeeded not only in anticipating the most important currents in photography, but also in decisively shaping them - especially with his sensitive reportages.

Ralph Goertz, filmmaker and photo curator, accompanied Timm Rautert over three years in his studio in Essen and provides deep insights into the various groups of works, but also into the consideration of the medium of photography.

Peter Mitchell counts as one of the most influential British color photographer and has been quietly building a career for 40 years. Living and working in Leeds for much of his life, Mitchell treats his surrounding with a unique sense of care that is evident in his work.

Mitchell’s landmark show 'A New Refutation of the Space Viking 4 Mission' at Impressions Gallery in 1979 has had an immeasurable impact on contemporary photography.

The filmmaker Ralph Goertz was allowed to accompany the photographer at his studio and during a walk through his neighorhood in Leeds.

New German Photography

Since the 1990s, the Düsseldorf-based photo artist Thomas Struth has been one of the most internationally renowned German artists, and his work has made a significant contribution to establishing photography as a contemporary art form. With analytical precision and clarity, Struth designs in his often large-format works
visual landscapes that are reminiscent of perfectly organized stagings.

This retrospective film accompanies the artist since 2000 on location as he takes photographs and reflects on all of the artist's important series up to his current technology and animal images.

The film was invited to several film festivals in Toronto and Calgary, and also invited to the 7th Biennale Lanzarote. Also on view at Museum Folkwang, Martin-Gropius-Bau Berlin, High Museum of Art Atlanta, Saint Louis Art Museum and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

Candida Höfer studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy first film then photography at the famous class of Bernd Becher.
Höfer became famous with her sensitive and silent photographs on interiors and counts today as one of the most significant German artists.

Eugen Gomringer (born 20 January 1925 in Cachuela Esperanza, Bolivia) studied economics and art history at the universities of Bern and Rome from 1946 to 1950. In 1953, he founded the magazine Spirale with Dieter Roth and Marcel Wyss. From 1954 to 1958 he was Max Bill's secretary at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm. In 1959 he founded eugen gomringer press.

Eugen Gomringer is considered the founder of Concrete Poetry.

THOMAS RUFF

The Dusseldorf based photographer Thomas Ruff is next to Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, Candida Hofer and Axel Hutte internationally one of the best known photo artist in Germany. He was known since the late 1980s with his large-format portraits. With series such as jpegs, nudes or m.a.r.s.
Over four years we were allowed to accompany him during his creative process, taking pictures and hanging his exhibition in Muenster.

The film has been screened on several film festivals in Toronto, Calgary, Krakow, Dublin, Firenze and the Foto Biennale Ballarat.

Alec Soth‘s first major publication “Sleeping by the Mississippi” counts as one of the most important series of contemporary photography.

In occasion of the exhibition “Two Rivers. Joachim Brohm / Alec Soth”, curator and lmmaker Ralph Goertz met the artist at his studio in St. Paul and was allowed to accompany him while he was working with his 8x10 camera.

Isa Genzken

Sesame, open!

Isa Genzken is one of the most important contemporary artists and she is surprising the viewer in each of her works anew. Particular attention is given to Isa Genzken in her frequently fragile and fleeting works on materiality and deconstructivism. For her exhibition at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, the artist created a number of new works, which she presented skillfully with older works in the open space. This airiness in the presentation allowed a direct discourse between the viewer and the object.

Yvonne Rainer

Space - Body - Language

Yvonne Rainer (*1934 San Francisco) is one of the most important artists of our time. With her new dance they influenced the art scene of the 1960s and has worked with artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Morris and Carl Andre.

The Ludwig Museum in Cologne dedicated Yvonne Rainer a retrospective in 2012 and brought their dance performance "spiraling down and assisted living: good sports 2" in tanzhaus nrw to German premiere.

The short documentary gives an insight into the artists work, and we were allowed to interview her exclusively.
The second part of the film contains a documentation of the stage performance.

Norbert Tadeusz and Jesuit Priest Mennekes

The painter Norbert Tadeusz is an important German painter. With his seven-part polyptych "Nighthawks", which Tadeusz completed between 1970 and 1972, he created a distinctive work that located his painting style beyond expressionism or realism.

At Museum Ludwig in Cologne he met the Jesuit Priest Friedhelm Mennekes and gave deep insights into his working methods as well as his understanding of art.

Isabelle Cornaro

Isabelle Cornaro is focused on installations, sculptures, drawings and video works with fundamental questions of the representation and perception of images. In her installations she repeatedly takes up the theme of the central perspective and develops motivational compositions of classical landscape painting. The film accompanies the Parisian artist during the setup of her first institutional exhibition at the Kunstverein in Düsseldorf.

Otto Piene

The proliferation of the sun

Otto Piene is one of the most important German artists since the late 1950s with his raster pictures and smoking drawings. As initiator and co-founder of the ZERO Group, he gained world fame through his fire paintings, as well as his light sculptures, light ballets and performances.

In 2010 the german artist Günther Uecker re-installed his Flaamse Landschappen, which he originally installed together with Jef Verheyen in 1967, at the Langen Foundation in Neuss as part of the Quadriennale 2010. This first "Land Art" installation was groundbreaking for that time and art history.
We were allowed to accompany the artist during the setup.

Carmen Herrera

Lines of Sight

Born in Cuba in 1915, she is one of the pioneers of color field painting and geometric abstraction in America. For a long time she was ignored by the art market and sold her first picture at the age of 89 years. The New York artist produces powerful works with signal effect until the age of 102.

The film follows her footsteps in Paris and examines Carmen Herrera's artistic exploration of European and American art. In Paris, where she lived with her husband between 1948 and 1954, where she has founded the basis for her artistic vocabulary, which she still uses today.

Josef Albers

Outside the Square

Born in Bottrop in 1888, Josef Albers is one of the most important Bauhaus artists and a pioneer of geometric abstraction. He influenced generations of upcoming artists such as Robert Rauschenberg and Donald Judd.

The film retraces his artistic development at the Bauhaus Weimar and the Black Mountain College before he finds his life theme in 1950 with his "Homage to the Square".

SOULMATES

Alexej von Jawlensky und Marianne von Werefkin

The two important artists Alexey von Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin are one of the most important figures of Expressionism.

For almost thirty years they were closely linked in life and work. Together with Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter they founded the "NEW ARTIST ASSOCIATION MUNICH" and are considered as artistic pioneers for the development of Expressionism in Europe.

The film gives an inside view onto life and work of the two exceptional artists and visited the original locations in St. Petersburg, Munich, Murnau, Oberstdorf, St. Prex, Ascona and Wiesbaden.

The film was produced for the exhibition LEBENSMENSCHEN at the Lenbachhaus Munich and Museum Wiesbaden.

Alfred Sisley

Born in 1839 as the son of British parents in Paris, Alfred Sisley counts - next to Monet, Renoir, Degas and Pissarro - to the most important representatives of the French Impressionists.
