THOMAS DEMAND PRESENTS MODEL STUDIES AT THE RAKETENSTATION HOMBROICH

Siza Pavilion, Raketenstation Hombroich
Okt. 5th - Dez. 6th 2015

With studies of architectual models, the Insel Hombroich Foundation presents its first solo show of works by a contemporary artist. At the Siza Pavilion at the Raketenstation Hombroich, Thomas Demand is showing a selection from his new Model Studies series.

In his large-scale close-up photographs of models made by the influential Japanese architects SANAA and the American architect John Lautner, Demand guides our vision to the details. The material characteristics, the state and the way the models have been made are the defining features of the artist’s nigh-abstract compositions. Inscriptions, marks of wear and tear and the impression of sculptural depth evoked by the incident light are occasional reminders that these are images of architectural models.

Jim Dine (b. 1935) was one of the most important Pop artists of the 1960s, and won early recognition for his art, not just in the US but internationally. The retrospective Jim Dine. About the Love of Printing coinciding with his eightieth birthday features some 250 works – including woodcuts, lithographs, and etchings – and presents a representative survey of the artist’s work in the graphic medium, spanning more than five decades.

More than any other artist of his generation, Dine has created works using a wide variety of printmaking techniques and has repeatedly tested the limits and possibilities of graphic art – right up to incising the printing plates with a chainsaw.

THE PROBLEM OF GOD AT THE KUNSTSAMMLUNG NORTHERN WESTFALIA
26th. Sept. 2015 - 24th. Jan. 2016

The exhibition THE PROBLEM OF GOD at K21 (26 Sept, 2015 - 24 Jan, 2016) documents the ways in which the Christian image tradition has continued to evolve in secular contexts as a universal cultural heritage - and independently of specifically religious references. A striking number of works resist simple readings. Instead, they deploy complex narratives and images in an attempt to come to terms in subtle ways with Christian motifs, themes, or issues. The presentation, then, is not devoted to sacred art, nor to religiosity in general. The focus is on works that to be sure reference Christian symbols or thematic fields, but at the same time reflect upon and transform them critically while transferring them to new contexts, both in terms of content and visual aesthetics.

DOUG AITKEN AT THE KUNSTHALLE SCHIRN FRANKFURT
July 9th - Sept. 27th 2015

Doug Aitken counts as one of the most important vido artists of his generation. At the Schirn in Frankfurt he presents for the first time in Germany an overview of his works from 1997 till today. Breathtaking! We met the artist for an interview. Many thanks!

Civilization raises hopes – civilization is terrifying. These feelings are palpable in the inimitable works of art by the American artist Doug Aitken. His spectacular film and sound works take visitors on a synaesthetic journey around the world and into themselves – in an irresistible maelstrom of expressive images and rhythmic landscapes. With four expansive film installations and correlating sculptures as well as a site-specific sound installation, the exhibition will present an overview of the internationally renowned artist’s heterogeneous oeuvre throughout the entire exhibition area of the SCHIRN – and beyond. Aitken’s kaleidoscopic universe revolves around life’s existential questions, yet it does not supply any simple answers. Instead, the artist lends expression to an almost naïve fascination with being human and people’s sense of collectivity and cooperation.

WIM WENDERS AT MUSEUM KUNSTPALAST DUESSELDORF

4 REAL & TRUE 2
Wim Wenders. Landschaften. Photographien.

Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf
18.4.2015-16.8.2015

Wim Wenders (born in Düsseldorf in 1945) is internationally renowned primarily for his movies, such as Wings of Desire, Pina and The Salt of the Earth, a portrait of the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. But the filmmaker acknowledges: Photographic work is the other half of my life. For decades he has created a photographic oeuvre quite independent of his filmic work: photographs of lonely, at times somewhat bizarre places and landscapes, of settings that have their own story.

On the occasion of the artist’s 70th birthday in 2015, Museum Kunstpalast in collaboration with Wenders Images and the Wim Wenders Foundation is presenting a selection of about 80 large-scale photographs, which invariably are analogue creations, made without artificial lighting or tripod. The exhibits range from artist’s early black-and-white photographs and monumental landscape panorama pictures through to his rarely shown photographs of “Ground Zero” and new works that were made only last year.

We were allowed to accompany Wim Wenders during the set up of his show. Many thanks!
