KATHARINA GROSSE - INSIDE THE SPEAKER

Museum Kunstpalast Düsseldorf

September, 30th, 2014 – February, 1st, 2015

The internationally renowned artist Katharina Grosse (*1961), who lives in Berlin and teaches at the Academy of Art Düsseldorf, has explored the expressive potential of the medium of photography for over two decades. In the process, her work has reflected not only upon the impact of colours on the viewer, but also upon a radically new definition of the relationship between colour and picture ground.

For one of the exhibition halls of Museum Kunstpalast the painter is conceiving and creating an impressive walk-in installation measuring nearly 800 square metres, using masses of soil, colour and panels of fabric. A second exhibition hall focuses on her paintings: Like her installations, her canvases measuring up to 36 square metres take on considerable proportions and burst into the space with their colour expansions.

The artist thinks and acts in colour. She interacts with and against the exhibition space and expands into it by using a variety of materials, such as soil and panels of fabric, as is the case in this exhibition. All of these forms make up structures which defy the homogeneity of the architectural space with its defined coordinates of height, width and depth, and thus establish a separate reality within it. The installation consists of creases and shifts, waves and oblique planes, requiring a new kind of orientation and awareness on the part of the viewer. Visitors of the exhibition will come upon questions such as “what makes a picture (still) a picture?” and “what is the relationship between colour and surface and colour and space?”

We met the artist for an exclusiv interview. Many thanks!

ANNETTE MESSAGER - EXHIBITION/EXPOSITION
September, 27th, 2014 - March, 22nd, 2015
K21, Ständehaus, Düsseldorf

Annette Messager is a key figure on today’s international art scene, an artist whose oeuvre prepared the ground for contemporary French art. Nonetheless, her last solo show in a German museum took place almost 25 years ago. Now, this exhibition at the K21 provides art lovers with an opportunity to rediscover her. On view will be works dating from the late 1980s to the present. The series Les interdictions en 2014 was produced especially for the exhibition at the K21.

The Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen purchased the large-scale installation Sous vent (2004–10) in 2011, thereby augmenting its collection with a major position in contemporary art. Diverse objects including an oversized hand, a foot,  bodily organs, and plush animals, all covered by a black silk veil that is set into motion by air streams generated by three fans. In this work, the artist alludes to the forces of nature, but also to the unconscious and to the fears that lurk in the deep layers of the psyche. During the exhibition at the K21, Sous vent will be on view in an installation measuring more than 20 meters in length.

SLAPSTICK! The Art of Comedy
Lentos Art Museum Linz

28 February to 25 May 2014

PIE FIGHTS! FIST FIGHTS! CHASES!
Major turbulences, but also minor everyday mishaps – like the slippery banana peel – have become famous slapstick scenes. Visual artists are hot on the heels of the great masters and make use of the cultural codes of slapstick. In various media they purposely play with slapstick quotations, motifs and concepts borrowed from the genre.

ALICJA KWADE
- DEGREE OF CERTAINTY - MUSEUM HOUSE ESTERS

29 SEPTEMBER 2013 - 16 FEBRUARY 2014

The Berlin based artist Alicja Kwade counts to one of the important artists of the young generation. With her exhibition at Museum Haus Esters Degree of Certainty she presents her univers. With seven works all made specially for the presentation and one already in existence Kwade has created a network that is as complex as it is transparent, in which time, economic processes and cosmological phenomena are brought into relation with one another. In addition, with her spectacular outdoor piece Alicja Kwade continues the tradition in Krefeld of site-specific installations. A stream of 1417 stones rolls from the rear of the garden down to Haus Esters and penetrates the frame of the building. These boulders, of which the largest weigh up to three to five tons, grow smaller the closer they are to the house. Their number corresponds to the 1417 asteroids that circle close to the earth, and that have been deemed a threat by NASA.

We met her for an exvlusive interview during the setup. Many thanks!

Douglas Gordon will install an imaginary space in a real one. A space of depictions, past and instantaneous ones, composed by the view of the observer.
