DOUGLAS GORDON AT MMK FRANKFURT

19. November 2011 - 25. March 2012

Born in Glasgow in 1966, Douglas Gordon is today among the most important as well as the most influential artists of his generation. While he is famous for his films and large-scale video installations such as 24 Hours Psycho, his oeuvre also encompasses photographs, texts, sculptures and sound installations. He is a Turner Prize recipient and has been a professor at Frankfurt’s Städelschule art academy since 2010.

In addition to Play Dead; Real Time (2003), one of Gordon’s chief pieces, the MMK Museum für Moderne Kunst also has a number of other photo and video works by this artist in its holdings. Together they will provide the point of departure for the first major retrospective to be presented on Douglas Gordon in Europe since 2007.

With his analyses of images drawn from the collective memory and everyday culture, Gordon exposes basic patterns of perception. Within this framework, his works often revolve around phenomena of duplication and reflection: the couple, the double, light and dark, guilt and justice, etc.

THOMAS RENTMEISTER IM KUNSTMUSEUM BONN

Thomas Rentmeister - Objects. Food. Rooms
20.10.2011 - 05.02.2012

Thomas Rentmeister, born in 1964 in Reken (Westphalia), studied under Günther Uecker and Alfonso Hüppi at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf. During the 1990s he became prominent with his elegant polyester works which combine sculptural presence with a hint of the organically soft or even flowing. Thus, the reflective sculptures, which appear differently depending on the visitor’s point of view, lose their context-independent autonomy and “melt“ into their environment. His objects and installations, for which from the late 1990s on he has been using materials untypical for sculpture like handkerchiefs, potatoe chips, Penaten or Nutella creme, are yet another reference to everyday life. These materials do not only complement the plastic quality of his sculptures with their material-dependant dominant smell, they also ironize the neutral objectness that is so important to minimalism by establishing a humorous link between art and life. For Rentmeister, art is much more than just a formal exercise – sculpture (and its materials) is an everyday phenomenon, we just aren’t always aware of the esthetic quality of sugar cubes and handkerchiefs.

AERNOUT MIK - COMMUNITAS IM MUSEUM FOLKWANG
29. Oktober 2011 – 29. Januar 2012

In close cooperation with the Musée du Jeu de Paume in Paris and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum Folkwang is organizing a major retrospective of the Dutch artist Aernout Mik. For each work and station, the artist developed a specific exhibition structure. A high point of the retrospective in the Museum Folkwang will be the new video installation Shifting Sitting, specially made for this project.

Aernout Mik (born 1962 in Groningen) is among the most important artist in the Netherlands. His spatial and video installations, with their numerous crossovers between film, video, performance, sculpture and architecture, has fundamentally extended the use of moving pictures.  In a unique way, Aernout Mik’s works reflect the psycho-social state of our society and our times.  His works often refer to current political and social situations and their coverage in the media. Thus you find topics such as current wars, global crises, economic depressions, racism and social tensions, without their being photographed directly.

We were allowed to accompany him during the set up. THANKS!

IKS PRODUCED A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT FOUR AVANT-GARDE WOMEN ARTISTS

The film by Ralph Goertz is centered around four important women artists of the avant-garde: Claude Cahun, Florence Henri. Sonia Delaunay and Sophie Taeuber-Arp. The film was made for the exhibition "The other side of the moon" at the Kunstsammlungen Northern Westfalia (K20) in Düsseldorf.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MOON
Women Artists of the Avant-garde
22. Oct. 2011 - 15 Jan. 2012
K20 - Grabbeplatz - Düsseldorf

The exhibition The Other Side of the Moon focuses on eight female artists who made major contributions to the aesthetic renewal of Europe during the 1920s and 1930s. Through their high levels of artistic achievements, persistent attempts to establish contacts, and unconditional commitment, they continually generated networks at the very heart of the avant-garde community. For the first time in this constellation, this exhibition offers viewers an opportunity to become acquainted with the lives and works of Claude Cahun, Dora Maar, Sonia Delaunay, Florence Henri, Hannah Höch, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, and the less familiar artists Katarzyna Kobro and Germaine Dulac.

NEWS: TRANS-URBAN NEWS. PHOTOGRAPHY; VIDEO AND SCULPTURE FROM THE COLLECTION
Museum Ludwig Cologne / 13.08. - 23.10.2011

In the mid-1990s, urban planner and architect Thomas Sieverts coined the term Zwischenstadt, or “trans-urban-city,” to describe rampant urban sprawl. But it was actually photography that first drew people’s attention to this theme as early as the 1960s and 70s, one that had until then not been considered worthy of depicting. Instead of heroic metropolises or sublime natural landscapes, artists such as Ed Ruscha and Dan Graham, or photographers like Robert Adams and Lewis Baltz, portray gas stations, parking lots, suburban developments, motels and industrial parks. They show suburban areas and landscapes that are just taking shape, drawing attention to the anonymity of vernacular architecture and prefabricated homes. The exhibi-tion follows their lead, presenting photographs from the collection of Museum Ludwig as well as works by the next generation of artists. These examine not only the local built environment, but also its psychosocial influ-ence on inhabitants. The exhibition brings together works by Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joachim Brohm, Chargesheimer, Mark Dion, William Eggleston, Jeanne Faust, Andreas Gursky, Douglas Huebler, Joan Jonas, Manfred Pernice, Peter Piller, Robert Smithson, Thomas Struth and Thomas Ruff.

NEWS: NORBERT TADEUSZ IS DEAD
He is considered as one of the most important representative of the figurative painting in Germany. Norbert Tadeusz, who was first a master student of Joseph Beuys and later became a professor at the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, died a few days ago at the age of 71 years in his hometown Düsseldorf as a result of its long-standing disease.

We deeply regret the death of this exceptional artist!

Apart from his nudes and his radical Nighthawk series, especially his horses and slaughterhouse scenes are the most important images of Tadeusz. On the Insel Hombroich in his large and expressive pictures he will still be alive in the Tadeusz Pavilion, which was designed by Erwin Heerich. We were allowed to accompany the artist over 15 years of time on film and thank him for his humanity, his art and the combative exchange with him.

NEWS: IKS PRODUCES FILM ABOUT ALFRED SISLEY
In cooperation with the Von der Heydt Museum, Wuppertal, and Dr. Gerhard Finckh we currently
produced a documentary film by the English impressionist Alfred Sisley. The film we produced exclusively for the exhibition in Wuppertal, which starts on 13/09/2011.

The Paris-born son of British parents is today, with Monet, Renoir, Degas and Pissarro one of the important representatives of impressionism. More astonishing is that Sisley had no major solo exhibition in Germany till today.

The film goes in search of clues to Paris, Pont-Marly, Moret sur Loing, Veneux-Nadon, Rouen, London and finally Cardiff, where Sisley has found his main and last motive: the Storr Rock.
